Concrete grinding Brisbane

Concrete grinding matched to the required floor outcome

Concrete grinding can remove nominated surface material, reduce selected high areas or create a profile for a specified coating or floor-covering system. It is not one universal process and does not make every slab perfectly level.

Wirth Floor provides concrete grinding and preparation for selected Brisbane and South East Queensland residential and commercial projects.

Concrete floor grinding equipment preparing a Brisbane slab

Method selection

Start with what the floor must be ready for

Preparation grinding

Create the cleanliness and surface profile required by the coating or floor-covering specification that follows.

Coating or residue removal

Remove nominated compatible coatings, paint or adhesive residues after the material, bond and any hazardous-content concern are assessed.

High-spot reduction

Reduce identified high areas where grinding is suitable. Broader flatness or level changes may require survey, levelling products or other rectification.

Local detail work

Edges, corners, stairs, doorways, fixtures and services can require smaller tools and separate time allowances.

Honed appearance

Further refinement can produce a lower-sheen concrete appearance where the slab and intended use suit that finish.

Handover standard

Agree how cleanliness, profile, high areas, residues and visible defects will be inspected before the next contractor or coating stage.

Scope inputs

What changes a grinding proposal

  • Current coating, covering, adhesive or contamination
  • Required next flooring or coating specification
  • Cracks, weak concrete, high or low areas and repairs
  • Area, edges, penetrations and restricted access
  • Power, water, loading, lifts and operating hours
  • Occupied-area isolation and dust-sensitive equipment
  • Waste handling and handover responsibility

Hazard boundary

Silica and older floor materials require separate controls

Grinding concrete can create respirable crystalline silica. Current Queensland duties require processing to be controlled and the work assessed and documented as required.

Older tiles, sheet flooring, underlays or mastics may also contain asbestos. Suspected material must be identified and managed before ordinary grinding or removal disturbs it; floor preparation is not a substitute for hazardous-material assessment or licensed removal where required.

Project pathway

A preparation process that ends with a defined handover

  1. Define the next stageObtain the coating or floor-covering substrate requirements.
  2. Inspect the floorReview layers, defects, access and hazardous-material questions.
  3. Agree the methodRecord removal, grinding, edges, limits and waste scope.
  4. Prepare the slabComplete the controlled work and document newly exposed conditions.
  5. Check handoverAssess the prepared area against the agreed acceptance points.

Concrete grinding FAQs

Questions to answer before mobilisation

Will grinding make a floor perfectly level?

No. It can reduce selected high areas. Low areas, broad tolerances, movement or structural issues may need a survey, levelling system or separate repair design.

Can every adhesive be ground off?

No. Material type, thickness, bond, hazardous-content risk and the next system influence the safe and suitable method. Test work may be needed.

Does grinding repair cracks?

No. Grinding can expose and clean a defect, but moving or structural cracks require cause assessment and a project-specific repair approach.

Is concrete grinding dust-free?

No process should be described as literally dust-free. Engineering controls, isolation, cleaning and work practices are selected for the task and site.

Can occupied areas remain open?

That depends on access, noise, silica controls, services, nearby people and operations. Occupied-site staging must be assessed rather than assumed.

How is readiness confirmed?

Use the acceptance requirements of the next system, including the specified profile, cleanliness, soundness, moisture criteria and documented exclusions.
