Polished concrete Brisbane

Polished concrete planned around the slab and finish

Polished concrete mechanically refines a suitable slab through staged grinding and polishing. The existing concrete influences aggregate distribution, colour, cracks, repairs, edges and variation, so exposure and sheen should be discussed before work begins.

Wirth Floor provides polished concrete for Brisbane and South East Queensland homes and commercial interiors, subject to slab suitability, access and project scope.

Finish brief

Choose exposure and sheen with the slab in mind

Cream or surface finish

Retains more of the original slab surface. It generally relies on suitable placement, finish and flatness because deeper grinding is not used to change every variation.

Partial exposure

Reveals a salt-and-pepper or partly exposed aggregate pattern. Distribution can vary with the original placement and grinding depth.

Greater exposure

Deeper grinding reveals more aggregate and can also reveal repairs, holes, edges and differences across the slab.

Lower sheen

Produces less reflection while retaining the character of the refined concrete. Maintenance and traffic still influence appearance.

Higher sheen

Uses further refinement stages for more reflection. Lighting, flatness, scratches and cleaning can become more visually apparent.

Project sample

Photographs and samples guide a finish category but cannot make one slab reproduce another slab's exact colour or aggregate pattern.

Slab assessment

What affects the achievable result

  • New or existing concrete and placement history
  • Cracks, weak areas, holes, contamination and repairs
  • Flatness and aggregate distribution
  • Previous coatings, adhesives or floor coverings
  • Walls, stairs, fixtures, doorways and edge access
  • Traffic, expected spills, cleaning and appearance
  • Other trades, protection and available programme

Project pathway

From brief to handover

  1. Share the siteProvide the area, use, photos and finish direction.
  2. Assess the slabReview visible condition, access, edges and existing treatments.
  3. Agree the finishRecord exposure, sheen, repairs, inclusions and natural variation.
  4. Refine the concreteComplete the preparation and polishing stages in the written scope.
  5. HandoverConfirm access restrictions and compatible care guidance.

Safety boundary

Concrete polishing requires controlled silica processing

Grinding and abrasive polishing silica-containing concrete can create respirable crystalline silica. Workplace Health and Safety Queensland states that processing crystalline silica substances must be controlled, with the risk assessment and additional duties determined for the work.

Site access, isolation, engineering controls, cleaning and any occupied-area staging should therefore form part of the project plan rather than being covered by a “dust-free” promise.

Polished concrete FAQs

Questions to settle before work starts

Can every existing slab be polished?

No. Condition, contaminants, repairs, thickness, flatness, aggregate and access need assessment. Some floors require preparation, another finish or a more limited result.

Will exposure be uniform everywhere?

Not necessarily. Aggregate distribution and slab flatness vary. Edge zones, patches and previous work can look different from open areas.

Can cracks be made invisible?

No reliable promise can be made. Repair colour and texture can remain visible, and moving cracks may reopen unless their cause is addressed.

Is polished concrete automatically slip-resistant?

No. The completed surface, contaminants, footwear, cleaning and wet or dry conditions affect performance. Any project-specific classification must be identified and evidenced.

How long will the work take?

Area, slab condition, repairs, exposure, refinement stages, edges, access and protection determine the programme. A site-specific schedule follows assessment.

How should the floor be maintained?

Use compatible cleaning guidance provided for the completed system. Manage grit and spills, and assess local wear before applying another treatment.
